# Stand tall!

*A slumped back is rarely only a back. Stand tall in body, mind and inner direction: stand, cut one thought, write one sentence.*

> I am not what happened to me. I am what I have decided to become.

Carl Gustav Jung, in substance. The exact wording is not secured. The direction is: you do not become the minutes of your circumstances. You become what you stand up into.

> **Key point:** **Key takeaways:** “Stand tall” is not a pose for a photo. It is three postures: body, mind, inner direction. Stand straight without locking up. Do not pour fear, anger, envy and guilt into the tank. When courage is gone, the next action is still yours.

A slumped back is rarely only a back. You move through the day ducked down and call it modesty. The mind does the same. It feeds on fear, anger, envy and guilt, then wonders why the day is heavy.

“Stand tall” is one of the few sentences that starts in the body and ends in a decision. Physical. Mental. Inner. Read it only as a back-school tip and you leave half of it on the table. Read it as a magic formula and you do the same. It is a posture you can carry out today. After that comes the work. Not instead of the work.

## Why is a straight back not enough?

A straight back with a muddy mind is theatre. A clear mind in a collapsed body is rarely taken seriously. Both, without an inner direction, fold at the first resistance.

The three levels belong together. The body shows how you enter a room. The mind decides what you feed the day. The inner direction decides whether a setback gets the last word. Miss one level and you compensate with noise: a louder opinion, a higher chin, a longer explanation.

> **Key point:** Calm does not come from intending to be a calm person. It comes from a posture that does not ask permission.

## How do you straighten the body without going stiff?

You stand upright by lengthening upward through the crown of the head, without hardening the muscles. The key is ease, balance, naturalness. Stiff is not upright. Stiff is fear with good posture in the shop window.

- Crown up, neck long, muscles not clenched.
- A light walk. No shuffling. No stumbling as a permanent style.
- Shoulders loose. Not hiked up. Not artificially yanked back.
- Chest slightly forward and up, so the breath has room.
- Do not lift the chin. A lifted chin does not look important. It looks past people.

This changes how you meet people and rooms. Confidence in how you show up is visible before the first sentence. Others read the posture faster than they read your intention.

In an older body the effect is plain: a freer chest makes breathing easier. Someone who walks collapsed does not only look older. He moves as if the day were already lost. Standing tall is not a promise of youth. It is the decision not to carry the ribcage like a suitcase.

## What does not go into the tank?

You slump in the mind too, when you think small and call it realism. You become similar to what you picture on repeat. So feed the picture with the goal, not with the commentary on why it will fail anyway.

A driver does not pour sugar into the tank and then blame the engine. Fear, anger, envy and guilt are that sugar. They feel like depth. They drive nothing. What to do when fear gets loud is in [Overcome Fear: Your Fear Has No Veto](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/overcome-fear-act-instead-of-waiting/). How the inner talk tips when the critic takes the chair is in [Talking to Yourself](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/self-talk-inner-critic-reset-method/).

Do not stay stuck in today’s fog and call it the present. The present is where you execute. The goal is ahead of you. Ask a concrete question: where do you give more today, and what shows that the quality of the day went up? Not the mood. The execution.

An upright mental posture shows quickly, because it is visible: fewer excuses, a clearer goal, less theatre. Admiration is a side effect. It is not the metric.

## What do you do when courage is gone?

Some people do not fold in the back. They fold in courage. The day is too heavy, the attempt was useless, the next step is supposedly not worth it. That is not a verdict on character. That is a dropped posture. The remedy is not a slogan. It is standing up on the inside: you take back the decision of who you become in this matter.

Jung, in substance, hits the point. You are not the sum of what happened to you. You are the decision about what you do with it. An earlier mistake stays a lesson. It does not become an identity. That is also what [Forget the Past!](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/let-go-of-the-past-learn-from-mistakes/) is for.

Standing up on the inside means: you carry out the next action as if courage were already on the way. Often it arrives after the posture, not before. Success is then not a mood you wait for. Success is the direction you give the next hour.

Three sentences. Not a poster. A test:

1. **Body:** Stand tall physically, so confidence sits in how you show up, not only in the intention.
2. **Mind:** Stand tall mentally, so you see the goal and not only today’s fog.
3. **Posture:** Stand tall on the inside, so a setback does not get the last word and success is a decision again.

## Common questions

### Is “stand tall” only about posture?

No. The back is the first level. Then comes what you feed the mind, and the decision of who you are after a setback. Miss one level and you are left with a pose or a resolution.

### How do I stand upright without looking stiff or arrogant?

Crown up, shoulders loose, chest slightly lifted, chin not jutting, a light walk instead of a shuffle. Stiff is tense fear. A lifted chin is not dignity. It is a gaze over people’s heads.

### What do I do when courage is gone?

You do not wait for courage to return. You aim the next small action: stand, write one sentence about the goal, carry out the step. Courage often follows the posture. An illness or a serious crisis is not solved by that. For those you get help, instead of selling posture as therapy.

### Am I what happened to me?

No. What happened stays a fact and a lesson. Identity is the decision about what you do with it. This is attributed to Carl Gustav Jung in substance. The exact wording is not secured. The distinction is usable.

## Your task for today

Today, before you start the next conversation. Duration: about five minutes. Repeat: the same thing once tomorrow morning. You do not measure the feeling. You measure whether the posture held in one concrete situation.

1. **Stand:** Stand for 60 seconds now. Crown up, shoulders loose, chest free, chin down. No mirror theatre.
2. **Walk:** Walk for two minutes, lightly. No shuffling. No stumbling as a style.
3. **Cut:** Write one sentence: which fear, anger, envy or guilt you will not pour into the tank today.
4. **Decide:** Write a second sentence: what you decide to become. Not what happened to you.
5. **Review:** In the evening, one line: in which situation the posture held, and in which it did not. Tomorrow you correct only that one point.

> **Key point:** You become what you stand up into. Not what you talk about.
