# You don't have a problem with your life. Your subconscious runs faulty software.

*Don Miguel Ruiz's Four Agreements won't work as long as you only read them. Four commands for your autopilot, and one question you finally ask today.*

![DailyInspire quote card with bull logo: "Stop renting out your energy to someone else’s dream." A quote by Kacper.](https://dailyinspire.ch/dateien/uploads/2026/10/20261021-074727-a5017ef1.webp)

> "Stop renting out your energy to someone else’s dream."

Kacper, DailyInspire.

> **Key point:** **Key takeaways:** "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz don't work for you because you read them instead of running them. Knowledge on top of an old autopilot stays cosmetic. Translated into craft, the four agreements are four commands: speak cleanly, take nothing personally, facts instead of assumptions, your best without overload. Today you ask one question you have been replacing with guesses for a week.

You are not powerless. You are just predictably programmed.

Every morning you boot up the same set of automatic thoughts. You brush your teeth half asleep and start a quiet war against yourself. Your sense of overwhelm is not a complicated verdict of fate. It is the plain log file of your subconscious.

Most people treat "The Four Agreements" like a pretty book of poems for a Sunday afternoon. Read, nod, close the book. Then it's back to a private hell of gossip, guesses and guilt.

Why? Because you want to change your life with motivation, without reinstalling the autopilot. That is calendar cosmetics.

You sit in the smoke of your own interpretations, mistake emotional theatre for reality and wonder why you're out of energy. The answer is cold: you are spending your resources to run a system that is wrecking you.

## Why don't the Four Agreements work for you?

Because reading is not execution. A sentence you understand does not change behaviour yet. Only repetition in daily life does that.

In Dr. Joe Dispenza's model, around 95 percent of your daily reactions run as an automatic, unconscious programme. That is his model, not an exact measurement. The core still holds: a large part of your day runs on habit. Same thoughts, same feelings, same decisions.

Lay new principles on top of that autopilot without rewriting it, and you get the old result with new vocabulary.

> **Key point:** You don't have a knowledge problem. You have an execution problem with good taste in books.

## What does Toltec smoke have to do with your brain?

The "smoke" is an old image for what you would call a habit loop today. In his book, Don Miguel Ruiz tells the legend of a man who, three thousand years ago, realised that matter is a mirror reflecting the light of consciousness. But the human mind lives in a "dream", hidden behind a thick wall of smoke.

That is a legend, not history. The historical Toltecs lived much later, roughly between 900 and 1150 AD. As an image, the story still works. In today's terms, the smoke is the loop of habitual thinking and feeling that steers your behaviour before you consciously decide.

Here is the difference:

- **Old programme, thoughts:** self-accusation and guesses.
- **Old programme, feelings:** guilt, shame, fear.
- **Old programme, body:** constant stress. In Dispenza's model, energy gets stuck in the lower three centres: survival, procreation, self-centred control.
- **New protocol, word:** conscious intention. The word becomes a working command.
- **New protocol, reaction:** no reaction to other people's dream.
- **New protocol, direction:** energy out of survival mode and towards growth and wholeness, in Dispenza's image towards the heart.

## Who is your inner Judge?

The inner Judge is the voice that grades every step you take. Ruiz calls the process behind it "domestication".

Since childhood, beliefs and rules based on reward and punishment were installed in you. From them you built a powerful structure in your head: the Judge, who assesses you constantly. And the Victim, who serves the sentence without argument, in the form of guilt and shame.

Living in that state keeps your body on alert. It reacts to threats that don't even exist in the physical world. Dispenza describes this as the body getting used to stress chemistry. Why the inner critic is so loud and how to reset it is in [The Most Important Conversation of Your Life](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/self-talk-inner-critic-reset-method/).

## Do you have to look for the answer outside?

No. The intelligence and freedom you need already live in you. You don't have to find them in new apps, other people's opinions or more stuff.

You need to remove the blocks and end the hypnosis of outdated software. The four agreements are nothing more than four precise system commands. They switch off the analytical noise and bring your nervous system into a calmer, more ordered state. More in [God Lives in You. Stop Looking for Him Outside.](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/god-lives-in-you-stop-looking-outside/)

## Which excuses keep your old programme alive?

Three sentences keep the old programme stable. All three sound reasonable. None of them is.

**"I try to follow the rules, but it doesn't work."** "Try" is your comfort's favourite word. A brain doesn't learn by trying. It learns by repetition. You don't have an ability problem. You are missing enforced repetitions.

**"Other people hurt me and lead me astray."** In everyday life, it is usually your own assumptions that trigger the reaction, not someone else's sentence. If you take every outside opinion to heart, you are voluntarily renting out your energy to someone else's dream. This is about slights and comments. Real violence and abuse are something else.

**"I'm waiting for better conditions and full motivation."** Motivation is an emotional variable. Your capacity changes from hour to hour: rested in the morning, you act differently than in the evening or when you are ill. Waiting for the perfect moment just means avoiding the discomfort of change. Why fear has no veto here is in [Your Fear Has No Veto](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/overcome-fear-act-instead-of-waiting/).

## How do you run the Four Agreements as a protocol?

You run them by turning each agreement into a daily command. Philosophy becomes a procedure:

1. **Encoding, agreement 1:** Be impeccable with your word. No gossip, no self-accusation.
2. **Isolation, agreement 2:** Don't take anything personally. Disconnect from other people's dream.
3. **Verification, agreement 3:** Don't make assumptions. Demand facts, not fairy tales.
4. **Execution, agreement 4:** Always do your best. Execute without negotiating.

### Agreement 1: How are you impeccable with your word?

By no longer turning your word against yourself or others. The word carries your intention. Ruiz describes words aimed at yourself (self-accusation) or at others (gossip) as poison for your own system.

**Operating instruction:** No gossip, no complaining. Say only what is true and what you can stand behind. Your word becomes a clean command, not idle noise. More in [Words Have Meaning](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/words-have-meaning/).

### Agreement 2: How do you take nothing personally?

By reading someone else's reaction as information about them, not about you. Whatever people say or do is a projection of their own dream and their own conditioning. If you take it personally, you assume their dream is about you, and you get pulled into their illusion.

**Operating instruction:** Treat other people's reactions as data points about their software, not about your worth. Stop looking for approval outside. You don't need permission from someone else's defence mechanisms.

### Agreement 3: How do you stop making assumptions?

By asking before you interpret. Assumptions are fiction written in stress mode. You build a drama in your head, take it for the truth, then attack people over scripts you wrote yourself.

**Operating instruction:** One rule applies: data before drama. Ask questions until the matter is completely clear. Instead of guessing, ask for facts and say directly what you need. How self-deception works is in [The Pink Rabbit](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/self-deception-success-pink-rabbit/).

### Agreement 4: What does "always do your best" mean?

It means doing what is possible today. No more and no less. This agreement is the switch that turns the other three into habits. The quality of your action depends on your resources. In the morning you have different energy than in the evening, when you are tired or ill.

**Operating instruction:** Doing your best means avoiding two mistakes:

- **Overload and excessive effort:** They wear the body down and lead to frustration.
- **Comfortable neglect:** It wakes the inner Judge and produces guilt.

Work within today's capacity. Then the Judge has no grounds to pass a sentence on you. How to build repetitions without ego is in [Building Habits > Ego](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/building-habits-1-percent-rule/).

## Common questions

### Who wrote "The Four Agreements"?

The Mexican author Don Miguel Ruiz. The book was published in 1997. In it, Ruiz combines images from Toltec tradition with practical rules for everyday life.

### What do the Four Agreements have to do with Joe Dispenza?

Directly, nothing. They are independent authors. The connection is my reading: Ruiz describes what to change. Dispenza's model of habit, stress and repetition explains why it won't stick without daily practice.

### Does "don't take anything personally" mean I have to accept everything?

No. It means you don't turn slights and opinions into your identity. Setting boundaries is still your job. With violence, abuse or bullying, you accept nothing. You get help and protect yourself.

### What if guilt and shame from my past run very deep?

Then it is not a discipline problem. A daily protocol helps, but it does not replace therapy. If old experiences weigh heavily on you, talk to a professional. In Switzerland, Die Dargebotene Hand is available around the clock on 143.

## Your task for today

Do this right after reading:

1. **Open:** Open your notebook or calendar.
2. **Find:** Find one relationship or matter where you have been guessing for at least a week and putting off a simple question.
3. **Ask:** Ask that question directly. In writing or out loud. No emotional decoration, no justification.
4. **Accept:** Do it as well as you can today. Take the answer as a data signal to correct your system.

No discussion. Execute.

You can spend the next three years reading books about personal growth, planning the perfect morning routine and explaining why it was never the right time.

Or you can understand that your body is the place where the best in you wants to show up. Then you pack away your emotional excuses and start acting within your capacity.

Time passes either way. Whether you build a new habit or write a philosophy for your standstill. More protocols are on the [DailyInspire.ch blog](https://dailyinspire.ch/en/blogs/).

> **Key point:** Stop negotiating with your life. Decide today.
